Ms Sukla Mitra,

The Double Victor

Ms. Sukla Mitra conquered not one, but two gynaecological cancers, facing uterine and ovarian tumours simultaneously. After major surgery and five years of rigorous follow-up with multiple blood tests, she declared herself cured. Her triumphant return to entrepreneurship proves that double challenges yield double victories.
Her Courageous Journey

Double cancer, single spirit

Ms. Mitra required extensive surgery to address both cancers, followed by prolonged monitoring that tested her endurance.

Despite the physical and emotional demands, she completed every step successfully. Questions once loomed over whether her illness would end her decades-old Sukla’s Boutique.

Yet she emerged unphased, determined to elevate her life’s work.

Triumph Through Boutique

With her able daughters and supportive family, Ms. Mitra took Sukla’s Boutique to international fame. She poured renewed energy into designs and business, overcoming multiple comorbidities that would deter most. Her success shows that right guidance, treatment, and mindset turn cancer battles into spectacular comebacks.
Beyond design, she is a gifted painter, a skilled stitcher, a gracious host, and a culinary enthusiast. Each thread she weaves, each dish she prepares, tells a story of hope, perseverance, and love for life. Her keen sense of colour and her eye for beauty make her creations not just fashion, but emotion—expressing triumph over pain

The Story of Sukla's Boutique – Our Journey

30+ Years

I, Sukla Mitra, began my journey with Sukla's Boutique over 30 years ago, starting with bare minimum resources but an unwavering passion for handcrafted textiles. Through perseverance, resilience, and dedication, the boutique gradually carved a distinctive identity in the world of ethnic fashion.

Our foundation has always been rooted in handmade sarees—from hand-painted and hand-block Cotton, Silk, and Tassar sarees to intricate Gujarati, Kantha, and Parsi embroidery, along with hand Aari and Zardozi work. Each creation reflects craftsmanship, tradition, and timeless elegance.

2018

Life tested me in 2018 when I was diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer. For a few moments, everything stood still. Thanks to my exceptional doctor and his dedicated team, the cancer was detected at an early stage and successfully treated through surgery.

"That phase reinforced my belief that when the going gets tough, the tough get going."

During this time, my younger daughter, Ms Shalini Mitra, despite having a completely different academic background with an MPhil in Economics, chose to walk alongside me and join the boutique. Her support, strength, and fresh perspective became a defining turning point in our journey.

Without looking back, we evolved with changing fashion trends and expanded into modern women's attire, including dresses and kurtis, while continuing our legacy of exquisite sarees.

COVID-19

Even during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, our journey did not pause. Instead, we embraced change and began our online journey, a decision that proved to be one of the most impactful milestones for Sukla's Boutique. Today, our creations reach remote corners of India, metropolitan cities, and customers abroad, connecting cultures through handcrafted fashion.
